Bangkok->Um Phang w/ friendz

by HunterProvyn

I rented a car with 3 other english speaking tourists and we drove from Bangkok to Tak, then south on Death Highway to Um Phang.  Here are some pics....

The Mickeydeez is in Bangkok, in the Pat Pong district.  There is lots of good entertainment there, like pingpong shows and darts.  I actually got hit by a dart in the back of the head, and remarkably, it didn't hurt very bad at all.  They must be really light.  They still are able to pop the balloons, though.

The waterfall is called "Thee Lor Su" which means "Water Fall Big" in the Karen language, spoken by the ethnic group of the same name who are mostly refugees from Burma and live in UNESCO sponsored villages along the Burmese border of Thailand.  We all jumped into it - it is only about 20 feet high.  During the wet season this set of falls is totally amazing (i believe).

The karaoke bar is under the only internet cafe in Um Phang.  The night we were there, a fight broke out between a woman and a dude who was passed out at a table next to us.  The girl's friend raised a chair behind her back, but I prevented her by holding it down.  Then it looked like things were calming down.  The funny thing was, the owner was watching this the whole time, and not doing a damn thing.  I think if he kicks someone out of his bar he loses face or something.  In the meantime a table got flipped over and then the girl broke a beer bottle against a different table that was still standing.  That's when I decided to jet....

Cheers mates

"i hope everyone noticed the excellent example of the Greater Thai Cockreed in the lower right of the 'umphang' pic, which is the last one. while the Lesser Cockreed is populous throughout the country - i have read articles that state they have become overpopulated and are beginning to be grouped with other 'pest' flora & fauna - the Greater variety is quite uncommon. great photography hunter! as an interesting aside, this cockreed has been intermittently used throughout history by the rural peoples for its oral hygiene qualities. used similarly to the african "chewing stick", when used daily it promotes a healthy and plaque free smile. because of its size however, it cannot be used in the capricious manner its african counterpart so often is. in fact, the literal translation of "brushing your teeth" in thai is "gently mouthtouching the cockreed tingle breeze". perhaps if hunter becomes zealous in his anthropologic photography he can send us an image of the cockreed in use."
